Every year in Arnold, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Nottinghamshire we gather around the bonfire.

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that Bonfire Night is a way to celebrate.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

A group of people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king when he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and wrote a letter to the parliament.

After they learned about the plan, the other conspirators were taken into custody here.

The Parliament made a statement regarding the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition of lighting up bonfires.

The firework manufacturers decided to change the celebration's name to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because of the focus on having fun.

• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of the failed complot, they are also used to cook a wide range of food. Crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. There are some people who cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat during the Bonfire Night. This cake has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it’s very tasty.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an attempt to blow up the parliament building.
