Every year in Aston, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Shropshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is a common association with Bonfire Night?

Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I and also tried to blow up the parliament in order to celebrate the failure of his attempt.

The Bonfire Night was celebrated in 1605 and has been ever since.

At that time there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who wanted an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The plan was to kill the king while he was there.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament after getting cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody once they learned of the plan.

The Parliament shared that the conspirators were caught and punished in a public statement.

Also, the Parliament chose to declare the 5th of November as a day to be thankful for, and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

We went to the Bonfire Night after that.

• There is a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and ask for money in order to buy fireworks. Kids blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• There is a tradition of carrying flaming tar barrels on the shoulders. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his group had to blow up the Parliament building.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.
