Brookfield Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Brookfield, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Lancashire.

What is the tradition of the Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that Bonfire Night is a way to celebrate.

This happened in 1605 and people have celebrated it ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to the rightful place.

Some people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to assassinate the king during the process.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but he got cold feet.

The other conspirators ended up being taken into custody after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament stated that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The 5th of November was chosen by the Parliament to be a day to be thankful for.

We eventually went to the Bonfire Night.

• Another tradition is called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and try to get some money to buy fireworks. In some areas you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of the failed complot, they are also used to cook all kinds of food. A lot of people make soup for the people coming by to see the fireworks. Some cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The traditional parking cake is eaten on the Bonfire Night. It has syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to make a model of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes.

People wear costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks, and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

The failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, is a clear nod to this.

Most of the time, these events include a firework display and a large bonfire.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas and treacle toffee are some of the things associated with the Bonfire Night.
