Collycroft Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Collycroft, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Warwickshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is the tradition of the Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because it is a way to celebrate.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating the night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king at that time, since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to return Catholicism to its rightful place.

They came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The king was in attendance, so the plan was to assassinate him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but got cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody here after they learned of the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators had been caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

Which led us to the Bonfire Night.

In the UK, Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed in a number of locations.

Over the years it has become a community focused event despite the fact that its origins are sinister.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers to "Bonfire Night" because it was focused on having fun.

In some regions, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• The bonfires aren't just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook a lot of food. Many people heat up soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional dessert people eat on Bonfire Night. There is syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle in this cake, and it is very tasty.
• It is very common for people in the UK to make a homemade model of a man and burn it. This effigy is meant to represent Guy Fawkes, and it’s usually made out of straw or paper, all of it stuffed within old clothes.

People in costumes use flaming torches, fireworks, and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they attempted to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

The majority of the time, these events end with a firework display and a large bonfire.
