In 1605 this happened and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.

What happened at that time is that there was a lot of anger against the king, since many considered he was intolerant against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

A group of people came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The king was in attendance and the plan was to assassinate him.

The conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament after getting cold feet.

The conspirators were taken into custody once they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators had been caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

It eventually led us to the Bonfire Night.

• There is a tradition called "Penny for the guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street, trying to get some money to buy fireworks. Kids blackened their faces in some regions, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to make a model of a man and then burn it. This effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed with old clothes.
