Droylsden Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Droylsden, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Greater Manchester.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

What happened at that time is that there was a lot of anger against the king, since many considered he was intolerant against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

The supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Commons.

The king was in attendance, so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up getting cold feet.

The conspirators who were involved in the plan were taken into custody here after they learned about it.

The Parliament made a public statement regarding the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a day to be thankful.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite the fact that its origins are sinister.

The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because of the focus on having fun.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas and treacle toffee are just some of the things associated with the Bonfire Night.

Here are some traditions that exist:

• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even if they are just a symbol of the failed complot. The crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The Parking Cake is a traditional cake that people eat on Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle is very delicious.
• During the Bonfire Night processions flaming tar barrels are carried on the shoulders. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
• The biggest cities in the country get some of the largest displays for firework displays. You are bound to find firework displays and bonfires all over the country.
• One interesting tradition is called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take the homemade Guy effigies on the street, trying to get some money for the fireworks. In some regions, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a homemade model of a man, very similar to a fictional character. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes to represent Guy Fawkes.

What should you wear to the events?

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in various costumes.

This is in preparation for the events, and it’s quite an interesting approach.

Most people like to show off their winter clothes on Bonfire Night.

Something to keep in mind is that a winter knit with a Classical touch is usually the right way to go here.

You don't have to dress up in a costume, but a proper outfit that protects you against cold weather is more than welcome.

People use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers when they parade in costumes on Bonfire Night.
