East Leake Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in East Leake, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Nottinghamshire we gather around the bonfire.

Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I and also tried to blow up the parliament in order to celebrate the failure of his plan.

In 1605 this happened, and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.

At that time there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being anti-Catholic.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

A group of people came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The plan was to kill the king because he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but ended up cold feet.

The conspirators were taken into custody here once they learned about the plan.

The Parliament shared the news that the conspirators were caught and punished.

Also, the Parliament chose to declare the 5th of November as a day to be thankful for, and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

There is a cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• The biggest cities in the country get some of the largest fireworks displays. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and amazing firework displays all over the country.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Night. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
