East Preston Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in East Preston, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of West Sussex we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I and also tried to blow up the parliament in order to celebrate the failure of his plan.

The Bonfire Night was celebrated in 1605 and has been ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that many thought he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were both Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to assassinate the king while he was there.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and sent a letter to the parliament.

The other conspirators were taken into custody once they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in honor of being thankful.

We went to the Bonfire Night due to this.

Throughout the UK, there are Bonfire Night activities.

Despite the fact that the origins of the event are sinister, it has become a community focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because of the focus on having fun.

The event of the 20th century was more similar to what we are currently experiencing.

What should you wear to the events?

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in various costumes at Bonfire Night.

This approach is quite interesting, and it is being prepared for the events.

Most people like to show off their winter clothes during the Bonfire Night.

Something to keep in mind is the fact that a winter knit with a classical touch is the right way to go here.

You don't have to wear a costume, but a proper outfit that protects you against the cold weather is more than welcome.

Which are the most popular foods during Bonfire Night?

The Bonfire Night events are more than just a celebration with bonfires.

There are many foods associated with the event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee and the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that are prepared around the 5th of November, and eaten throughout the country.

Some families eat soup and share it with friends or other family members.

Here are some traditions that exist:

• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, to blow up the Parliament building.
• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a homemade model of a man, very similar to a fictional character. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw, stuffed with old clothes, and meant to represent Guy Fawkes.
• The biggest cities in the country get some of the biggest firework displays. But in general you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
• The bonfires are not just a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all kinds of food. A lot of people cook soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil with marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat on the night of Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very tasty.
• Another interesting tradition comes in the form of “Penny for the Guy”. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and try to get some money to buy fireworks. There are kids that blackened their faces in some regions, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.

People wear costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament as a celebration of independence.
