Every year in Eastfield, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of North Yorkshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is the tradition of the Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate Bonfire Night.

Since 1605 people have been celebrating the Bonfire Night.

There was a lot of anger against the king, due to the fact that he was against Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were both Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king when he was there.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and wrote a letter to the parliament.

The other conspirators were taken into custody once they learned about the plan.

The parliament shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

After that, we went to the Bonfire Night.

• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even though they are just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. A lot of people heat up soup for the people watching the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows and sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat on the night of the bonfire. This cake is made with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
