High Seaton Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in High Seaton, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Cumbria.

What is the tradition of the Bonfire Night?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, and also the attempt to blow up the parliament.

This happened in 1605 and people have celebrated it ever since.

At that time there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The two people came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The plan was to kill the king when he was there.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and sent a letter to parliament.

The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.

The Parliament made a statement regarding the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November because it was a day to be thankful.

We headed to the Bonfire Night.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite its sinister origins.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century because it was focused on having fun.

• Some of the largest firework displays are in the biggest cities in the country. Even in rural areas, you can find bonfires and incredible firework displays.
• The tradition is to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Night processions. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in order to blow up the Parliament building.
• "Penny for the Guy" is one of the more interesting traditions. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to get some money to buy fireworks. Kids blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.

Which foods are popular during Bonfire Night celebrations?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only thing going on.

There are lots of foods associated with the event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

These are eaten all over the country, and some regions have their own special meals that they prepare around the 5th of November as well.
