Highlanes Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Highlanes, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Cornwall we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night connected to?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that Bonfire Night is a way to celebrate.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating it ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king because he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to its rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Commons.

The king was in attendance so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody when they learned of the plan.

The Parliament shared that the conspirators were caught and punished in a public statement.

The Parliament decided that the 5th of November was a day to be thankful for and therefore the tradition to light up bonfires.

We went to the Bonfire Night due to that.

There are lots of Bonfire Night activities in the UK today.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite the fact that it's origins are sinister.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century due to the focus being on having fun.

The event of the 20th century was more similar to what we are currently experiencing.

What should you wear to the events?

People tend to dress up in different costumes depending on where they live.

It is quite an interesting approach that is being prepared for the events.

The Bonfire Night is a great time for most people to show off their winter wear.

Something to keep in mind is the fact that a winter knit with a classical touch is usually the right way to go here.

You don’t have to dress up in a costume, but a proper outfit that helps you protect yourself against the cold weather is more than welcome.

Which foods are common during Bonfire Night celebrations?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only things happening.

There are many foods associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are all associated with Bonfire Night.

These are eaten throughout the country, and some regions even have their own special meals prepared around the 5th of November as well.

Some families eat soup and share it with friends or family members.

People use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

It's clear that this is a nod to the failure of the band that tried to blow up the Parliament as a celebration of independence.

The majority of the time, these events end with a firework display and a large bonfire.

There are some traditions that are common:

• It is very common for people in the UK to make a homemade model of a man and then burn it. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes.
• The tradition called "Penny for the Guy" is an interesting one. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to ask for money to buy fireworks. Kids blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• Some of the largest firework displays are in the biggest cities. Even in rural areas, you will find bonfires and incredible firework displays.
• The tradition is to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even if they are just a symbol of the failed complot. People heat up soup for the crowds that come by to see the fireworks. Some cooks cook potatoes wrapped in a foil with marshmallows or sausages. There is a parking cake that people eat on Bonfire Night. The cake has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very tasty.
