Hilton Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Hilton, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Derbyshire we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I while also attempting to blow up the parliament.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating the night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to its rightful place.

Some people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was for the king to be assassinated during the process.

A member of the conspiracy sent a letter to the parliament after getting cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared the fact that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for.

We ended up going to the Bonfire Night.

There are lots of Bonfire Night activities in the UK.

Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite the fact that its origins are sinister.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers to "Bonfire Night or the Fireworks Night" because it was focused on having fun.

The event of the 20th century was more and more similar to what we are experiencing today.

There are some traditions that are common:

• In the UK, it is very common for people to burn a homemade model of a man. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper, and stuffed with old clothes.
• The biggest cities in the country get the largest firework displays. There are bonfires and amazing firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
• There is a tradition of carrying flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the processions. This is in reference to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building.
• There is an interesting tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in a bid to get some money for fireworks. In some parts of the world, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes tried to do when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of the failed complot, they are also used to cook a wide range of food. Many people heat up soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. It is possible to cook potatoes wrapped in a foil as well as marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat during the Bonfire Night. This cake is made with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very tasty.
