Horsham Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Horsham, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Worcestershire we gather around the bonfire.

What is a common association with Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because of the Bonfire Night celebrations.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

The two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to assassinate the king while he was there.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament after getting cold feet.

The other conspirators ended up being taken into custody here after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in order to be thankful for it.

We went to the Bonfire Night due to that.

There are many Bonfire Night activities in the UK.

Despite the fact that its origins are sinister, the event has become a community focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because it was focused on having fun.

The event of the 20th century looked a lot like what we are experiencing today.

What should you wear at the event?

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in various costumes for Bonfire Night.

This is in preparation for the events, and it’s quite an interesting approach.

The Bonfire Night is a great time for people to show off their winter clothes.

Something to keep in mind is that a winter knit with a classical touch is usually the right way to go there.

A proper outfit that protects you from the cold weather is more than welcome, even if you don't have to wear a costume.

Which foods are popular during Bonfire Night?

The bonfire Night events are more than just a celebration with fireworks.

There are a lot of things associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are commonly associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that they prepare around the 5th of November as well.

Some families eat soup and share it with friends and family.

There are traditions associated with the Bonfire Night

Generally, Bonfire Night is a time when people parade in costumes and they also utilize flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers.

The failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament is a clear nod to that.

The majority of the time, these Bonfire Night events end with a firework display and large bonfire.

There are some common traditions:

• It is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, to blow up the Parliament building.
• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even if they are not meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. People heat up soup for the crowds that come by to see the fireworks. There are some people who cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake people eat on the night of the bonfire. The cake has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• An effigy, a homemade model of a man, is very common in the UK. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper, stuffed with old clothes, and meant to represent Guy Fawkes.
• Another interesting tradition comes in the form of “Penny for the Guy”. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in the days leading up to the Bonfire Night to ask for money for fireworks. In some regions you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was planning to blow up the Parliament.
• The biggest cities get some of the largest firework displays. You can find bonfires and firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
