Knowle Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Knowle, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Bristol we gather around the bonfire.

The Bonfire Night is one of those incredible festivities and celebrations that have been adopted as an annual event over the years.

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because he wanted to blow up the parliament.

In 1605 this happened and people have celebrated the night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that many thought he was against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to its rightful place.

The two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The king was in attendance so the plan was to kill him.

A member of the conspiracy sent a letter to the parliament, but got cold feet.

The other conspirators were also taken into custody when they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November because it is a day to be thankful for.

In the UK, Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed all over the place.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite the fact that it is sinister in nature.

The firework manufacturers decided to change the celebration's name to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because of the focus on having fun.

The event of the 20th century looked a lot like what we are experiencing today.

There are some traditions associated with the Bonfire Night.

People in costumes use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failure of the band that tried to blow up the Parliament as a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

The majority of the time, there is a firework display and a large bonfire.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night

Some people cook potatoes in a foil with marshmallows or sausages. People eat a traditional parking cake on Bonfire Night. It has syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle, and it is very delicious.
• It is common for people in the UK to make a model of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed with old clothing.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Night. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team made to blow up the Parliament building.
• The tradition is called "Penny for the Guy" Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street to ask for money for fireworks a few days before the Bonfire Night. In some parts of the world, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
