Knowle Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Knowle, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Devon.

What is the Bonfire Night connected to?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, and also the attempt to blow up the parliament.

This happened in 1605 and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being racist against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

The two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king because he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but was cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody here once they learned of the plan.

The fact that the conspirators were caught and punished was shared by the Parliament.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in order to be thankful.

Nowadays Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed throughout the UK.

The origins of Bonfire Night are sinister, but over the years it has become a community focused event.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers because of its focus on having fun.

• The bonfires are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all sorts of food. The crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in foil with marshmallows or sausages as well. The parking cake is a traditional cake people eat on Bonfire Night. It has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very tasty.
• Some of the biggest cities in the country have large firework displays. You can find bonfires and firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
• It is very common for people in the UK to burn a homemade model of a man. This effigy is made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes, it is meant to represent Guy Fawkes.
• A tradition is to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.

There are traditions associated with the night.

People parade in costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks, and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they attempted to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

Most of the time, these events end with a large bonfire and firework display.

Which foods are popular during celebrations?

The celebration with bonfires and fireworks is not the only thing happening.

There are many foods associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, or the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

These are eaten throughout the country and some regions have their own special meals prepared around the 5th of November.

Some families eat soups too and share them with friends or family members.
