Lochee Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Lochee, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Dundee.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated the Bonfire Night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king, due to the fact that he was against Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Commons.

The king was in attendance and so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody here once they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in honor of being thankful.

We went to the Bonfire Night.

There are Bonfire Night activities in the UK today.

Despite the fact that its origins are sinister, the event has become a community-focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers to "Bonfire Night or the Fireworks Night" because of the focus on having fun.

The event of the 20th century was more similar to what we are seeing today.

There are some traditions:

• There is a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in the days leading up to Bonfire Night to ask for money to buy fireworks. In some regions you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• During the Bonfire Night processions, flaming tar barrels are carried on the shoulders. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
• There are firework displays all over the country, with the biggest cities getting some of the largest displays. Even in rural areas you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays.
• The bonfires are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook a lot of food. People heat up soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. Some cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional dessert that people eat on Bonfire Night. There is syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle in this cake, and it is very delicious.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to make a homemade model of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of paper and straw and stuffed with old clothes.

Which foods are popular at Bonfire Nights?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only thing happening.

There are a lot of foods associated with the event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas and treacle toffee are just some of the things associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that are prepared around the 5th of November, and eaten throughout the country.

Some families eat soups and share them with friends or other family members.
