Every year in Locks Heath, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Hampshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night associated with?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, while also attempting to blow up the parliament.

The Bonfire Night was celebrated in 1605 and people have been celebrating ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king at that time, since he was seen as being anti-Catholic.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

Two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The king was in attendance and so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but was cold feet.

The conspirators were taken into custody when they learned of the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators had been caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light bonfires on the 5th of November to be thankful for.

We eventually ended up at the Bonfire Night.

There are a lot of Bonfire Night activities in the UK nowadays.

Despite the fact that its origins are sinister in nature, over the years Bonfire Night has become a community-focused event.

The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century due to the fact that the focus was on having fun.

• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a homemade model of a man, very similar to a fictional character. This effigy is meant to represent Guy Fawkes, and it’s usually made out of straw or paper, all of it stuffed within old clothes.
• The biggest cities get some of the largest firework displays in the country. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays.

The Bonfire Night celebrations are more than just a celebration with fireworks.

There are a lot of things associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas and treacle toffee are some of the things associated with the Bonfire Night.

These are eaten throughout the country and some regions have their own special meals prepared around the 5th of November.

It is important to note that some families share their soups with other family members.
