Every year in Mangotsfield, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Gloucestershire we gather around the bonfire.
The Bonfire Night has been an annual event over the years and is one of those incredible festivities.
Why do people love these festivals so much?
Here’s a quick roundup to help you get up to speed with the Bonfire Night, its starting point and the reasons behind its amazing popularity.
The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that he wanted to blow up the parliament.
This happened in 1605 and people have celebrated bonfires ever since.
There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.
Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.
Two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.
The plan was to assassinate the king during the process.
A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament after getting cold feet.
The other conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.
The Parliament made a statement and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.
The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for, and therefore the tradition to light up bonfires.
We eventually headed to the Bonfire Night.
Nowadays Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed all over the UK
Despite the fact that the origins of the event are sinister, it has become a community-focused event over the years.
The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century due to the fact that the focus was on having fun.
The event of the 20th century was more similar to what we are currently experiencing.
