Northfield Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Northfield, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of West Midlands we gather around the bonfire.

The main reason why Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate the failure of that attempt.

In 1605 people celebrated the Bonfire Night.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were both Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

Two of the supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king while he was there.

A conspiracy member got cold feet after sending a letter to the parliament.

The other conspirators were taken into custody here once they learned about the plan.

The Parliament shared that the conspirators were caught and punished in a public statement.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in order to be thankful.

We went to the Bonfire Night after that.

In the UK, Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed in a number of locations.

Despite the fact that Bonfire Night's origins are sinister, it has become a community focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because the focus was on having fun.

As the 20th century progressed, the event looked similar to what we are currently experiencing.

The failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, is a clear nod to this.

Most of the time, there is a large bonfire and a firework display.

There are some traditions that are common:

• The bonfires are not meant just to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all kinds of food. Crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. It is possible to cook potatoes wrapped in a foil with marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat on the night of bonfire. This cake is made with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• The tradition of "Penny for the Guy" is interesting. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street to ask for money for fireworks a few days before Bonfire Night. Kids blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• It is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. The plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building are a nod to this.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to burn a homemade model of a man. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed with old clothes.
• Some of the biggest cities in the country get some of the largest displays for firework displays. There are bonfires and incredible firework displays all over the country.

Which foods are popular during celebrations?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only celebrations of the night.

There are a lot of foods associated with the event.

In fact, things like the jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee or the toffee apples are widely associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals to be prepared around the 5th of November.
