Oatlands Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Oatlands, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of North Yorkshire.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for, and therefore the tradition of lighting up bonfires.

We went to the Bonfire Night due to this.

Nowadays Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed throughout the UK in locations like North Yorkshire.

Despite the fact that the origins of the event are sinister, it has become a community focused event over the years.

• There are firework displays throughout the country, with the biggest cities getting some of the largest displays. You can find bonfires and incredible firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Nights. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the parliament building.
• There's a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to ask for money for fireworks a few days before the Bonfire Night. In some parts of the country you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even though they are not meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. In fact, a lot of people heat up soup for the crowds coming by to see the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in foil and also marshmallows or sausages. There is a traditional cake called the parking cake that people eat on Bonfire Night. There is a cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle.
