Oldmixon Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Oldmixon, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Somerset we gather around the bonfire.

The Bonfire Night has been an annual event for a long time.

But what is it that makes people love these festivities so much?

What is the Bonfire Night associated with?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because of the Bonfire Night celebrations.

Since 1605 people have been celebrating the Bonfire Night.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that an armed struggle would restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to kill the king while he was there.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up cold feet.

The other conspirators were also taken into custody when they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were caught.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for, and therefore the tradition to light bonfires.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community-focused event despite the fact that its origins are sinister.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers due to the focus being on having fun.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee or the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

• The tradition is called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to ask for money for fireworks a few days before the Bonfire Night. There are kids that blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• Some of the biggest cities in the country have some of the largest firework displays. You are bound to find firework displays and bonfires all over the country.
• The bonfires are also used to cook all kinds of food, which is why they are not just a symbol of the failed complot. The crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. It's possible to cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat during Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very delicious.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to make a model of a man and then burn it. The effigy is usually made from straw or paper and stuffed into old clothes.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the parliament building.

Traditions associated with the night of bonfires

People parade in costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers during Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failed attempt by Guy Fawkes and his band to blow up the Parliament as a celebration of independence.

The majority of the time, these Bonfire Night events end with a firework display and large bonfire.
