In 1605 this happened and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The supporters came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The plan was to assassinate the king when he was in attendance.

A member of the conspiracy got cold feet and sent a letter to the parliament.

The other conspirators ended up being taken into custody after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were punished.

The Parliament decided that the 5th of November would be a day to be thankful for.

We eventually headed to the Bonfire Night.

The crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. Some even cook potatoes wrapped in a foil, but also marshmallows or sausages as well. People eat a traditional cake called the parking cake on Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very tasty.
• There are firework displays all over the country. You are bound to find firework displays and bonfires all over the country, even in rural areas.
• During the Bonfire Night processions, flaming tar barrels on the shoulders are a tradition. This is in reference to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building.
