Pallion Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Pallion, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Somerset we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night associated with?

The main reason why Bonfire Night exists in the UK is because it’s a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, while also attempting to blow up the parliament.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed that only an armed struggle would restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

The people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king during the process, because he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but got cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody when they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators had been caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a day to be thankful.

We eventually went to the Bonfire Night.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century because it was focused on having fun.

It is clear that this is a nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

Here are some traditions that are common:

• In the UK, it is very common for people to burn a homemade model of a man. The effigy is usually made from straw or paper and stuffed into old clothes.
• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of failed complot, they are also used to cook all kinds of food. A lot of people make soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil with marshmallows or sausages as well. There is a traditional cake called the parking cake that is eaten on Bonfire Night. The cake is made of syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• During the Bonfire Night processions, flaming tar barrels on the shoulders are a tradition. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had in order to blow up the parliament building.
• There's a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to get some money for the fireworks. In some parts of the world, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• There are firework displays all over the country, with the biggest cities getting some of the largest displays. Even in rural areas, you will find amazing firework displays and bonfires all over the country.

What should you wear to the events?

The interesting thing to note about Bonfire Night is that people tend to dress up in various costumes, depending on where they live.

It is quite interesting that this is being prepared for the events.

The Bonfire Night is a great time for people to show off their winter clothing.

Something to keep in mind is that a winter knit with a classical touch is probably the right way to go here.

If you want to protect yourself from the cold weather, a proper outfit is more than welcome.

Which foods are most popular during Bonfire Night celebrations?
