Penmaen Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Penmaen, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Caerphilly we gather around the bonfire.

What is a common association with Bonfire Night?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I while also attempting to blow up the parliament.

In 1605 this happened and people have celebrated the night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against the catholics.

At that time, Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics with the vision that only an armed struggle would reinstate Catholicism to the rightful place.

The supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The king was in attendance and the plan was to kill him during the process.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but ended up cold feet.

The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared the fact that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for, and therefore the tradition to light up bonfires.

We went to the Bonfire Night because of that.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite its origins being sinister.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers due to the focus on having fun.

The 20th century event looked similar to what we are experiencing today.

• During Bonfire Night, flaming tar barrels are carried on the shoulders. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
• The bonfires are supposed to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all kinds of food. People heat up soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and marshmallows or sausages as well. The parking cake is a traditional cake people eat on Bonfire Night. This cake is made of syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very delicious.
• There is an interesting tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street, trying to get some money to buy fireworks. There are kids that blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• In the UK, it is very common for people to make an effigy of a man and burn it. This effigy is stuffed with old clothes and made out of straw or paper, which is supposed to represent Guy Fawkes.
• The biggest cities in the country have some of the largest firework displays. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays.

People parade in costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers during Bonfire Night.

It is clear that this is a nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

Most of the time, these events end with a firework display and large bonfire.

Which foods are most popular during Bonfire Night?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only celebrations of the night.

There are a lot of things associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, and treacle toffee are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals to be prepared around the 5th of November.

It is important to note that some families share their soups with friends.

What should you wear on Bonfire Night?

Depending on where they live, people tend to dress up in various costumes on Bonfire Night.
