Every year in Ryton, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Somerset we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night associated with?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, while also attempting to blow up the parliament in the UK.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king, since many thought he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were both Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to it's rightful place.

Some people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to assassinate the king while he was in attendance.

A member of the conspiracy sent a letter to the parliament but ended up getting cold feet.

The conspirators who were involved in the plan were taken into custody here after they learned about it.

The Parliament shared the fact that the conspirators were caught and punished in a public statement.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November in order to be thankful.

• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a homemade model of a man, similar to a bird. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed with old clothes to represent Guy Fawkes.
• The bonfires are not meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook food. A lot of people cook soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes in foil with marshmallows or sausages as well. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat on the eve of Bonfire Night. There is syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle in this cake, and it is very delicious.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the processions. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his group had to blow up the Parliament building.
