Stanwell Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Stanwell, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Surrey we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate the failure of the event.

This happened in 1605 and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king at that time, since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who wanted an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

A group of supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The plan was to kill the king when he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and sent a letter to the parliament.

The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.

The fact that the conspirators were caught and punished was shared by the Parliament in a public statement.

Also, the Parliament chose to declare the 5th of November as a day to be thankful for, and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

Which led us to the Bonfire Night.

Despite the fact that Bonfire Night's origins are sinister, it has become a community focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century because of the focus on having fun.

In the 20th century, the event looked similar to what we are experiencing today.

What are you going to wear to the events?

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in different costumes on Bonfire Night.

This is in preparation for the events, and it is quite interesting.

The Bonfire Night is a good time for most people to show off their winter clothing.

Something to keep in mind is that a winter knit with a classical touch is probably the right way to go here.

There are some common traditions:

• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a homemade model of a man, very similar to a fictional character. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper, stuffed with old clothes, and is meant to represent Guy Fawkes.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an attempt to blow up the parliament building.
• There is a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street, trying to get some money to buy fireworks. In some parts of the world, you can find kids blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• The biggest cities in the country get some of the biggest firework displays. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays.
• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of failed complot, they are also used to cook all kinds of food. A lot of people heat up soup for the people who come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil with marshmallows or sausages as well. People eat a traditional parking cake on Bonfire Night. This cake is made with syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle.

Which foods are popular during the night?

The celebration with bonfires and fireworks is not the only thing happening.

There are lots of foods associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are just some of the things that are associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that they prepare around the 5th of November as well, and these are eaten throughout the country.

Some families eat soup and share it with friends or family.
