Tipton Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Tipton, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of West Midlands we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night connected to?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I, while also trying to blow up the parliament.

People have celebrated the Bonfire Night since 1605.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king, since many thought he was against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring back Catholicism to the rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to kill the king when he was there.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament but was cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody after learning about the plan.

The Parliament made a public statement regarding the situation, shared the fact that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a day to be thankful.

• The bonfires are supposed to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all kinds of food. Many people heat up soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. There are some people who cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake people eat on Bonfire Night. There is syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle in this cake, and it is very tasty.
• The tradition is called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street to ask for money for fireworks a few days before Bonfire Night. In some regions, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes tried to do when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.

Which foods are popular during the night?
