Tring Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Tring, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Hertfordshire we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because of the celebration of Bonfire Night.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being too tolerant of the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to its rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The plan was to kill the king while he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member got cold feet after sending a letter to the parliament.

The other conspirators were also taken into custody when they learned about the plan.

The fact that the conspirators were caught and punished was shared by the Parliament in a public statement.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition of lighting up bonfires.

We eventually headed to the Bonfire Night.

The origins of Bonfire Night are sinister, but over the years it has become a community focused event.

The firework manufacturers decided to change the celebration's name to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because it was focused on having fun.

• Another tradition is called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and try to get some money for fireworks a few days before the Bonfire Night. There are kids that blackened their faces in some regions, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• It is very common for people in the UK to make a homemade effigy of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of straws or paper and stuffed with old clothes.
• The biggest cities in the country get the largest firework displays. There are bonfires and amazing firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.
• The bonfires are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all kinds of food. Many people heat up soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes in foil with marshmallows or sausages as well. There is a traditional cake called the parking cake that people eat on Bonfire Night. This cake is made with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very tasty.
• It is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Night processions. This is a reference to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee and the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.
