Every year in Uplands, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Swansea.

In 1605 this happened and people have celebrated the night ever since.

At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king, since he was considered to be racist against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to the rightful place.

Two supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The king was present, so the plan was to kill him.

A member of the conspiracy sent a letter to the parliament, but got cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody here after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November because it was a day to be thankful for.

• It is common for people in the UK to make a model of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed into old clothes.
• There are firework displays all over the country. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and firework displays.
• During the Bonfire Night processions, flaming tar barrels are carried on the shoulders. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an attempt to blow up the Parliament building.
• The bonfires are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all sorts of food. People heat up soup for the crowds that come by to see the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil, and also marshmallows or sausages. There’s also a traditional cake that people eat on the Bonfire Night, named the Parking Cake. There is a cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
