Weaste Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Weaste, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Greater Manchester we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

It is a way to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes as he tried to assassinate King James I while also attempting to blow up the parliament.

This happened in 1605 and has been celebrated ever since.

There was a lot of anger towards the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.

There was a vision that only an armed struggle would restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

They came up with a plan to blow up the palace.

The king was in attendance so the plan was to kill him.

A member of the conspiracy got cold feet and sent a letter to the parliament.

The conspirators who were involved in the plan were taken into custody here after they learned about it.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators were punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and therefore the tradition of lighting up bonfires.

We went to the Bonfire Night because of this.

In the UK, Bonfire Night activities are enjoyed all over the place.

The origins of Bonfire Night are sinister, but over the years it has become a community event.

The firework manufacturers decided to change the celebration's name to Fireworks Night at the beginning of the 20th century because of its focus on having fun.

In the 20th century, the event looked similar to what we are seeing today.

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in different costumes during Bonfire Night.

This approach is quite interesting, and it is in preparation for the events.

There are some traditions that are common:

• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plan that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building.
• The biggest cities get some of the largest firework displays in the country. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays all over the country.
• It is common for people in the UK to make an effigy of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of paper or straw and stuffed with old clothes.
• "Penny for the Guy" is one of the more interesting traditions. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in order to ask for money for fireworks. Kids blackened their faces in some parts of the country, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even though they are not meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. Crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people make soup for them. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows and sausages. People eat a traditional parking cake on Bonfire Night. The cake has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle, and it is very delicious.

Which foods are popular during Bonfire Night celebrations?

The events of the Bonfire Night are more than just a celebration with bonfires and fireworks.

There are lots of foods associated with the event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are just some of the things that are associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals prepared around the 5th of November as well.

It is important to note that some families share their soups with friends and family.

People parade in costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers on Bonfire Night.

This is a clear nod to the failure of the band that tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence but in a safe manner.
