Willerby Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Willerby, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of East Riding of Yorkshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is a common association with Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because of the celebration of Bonfire Night.

This happened in 1605 and has been celebrated ever since.

At that time there was a lot of anger against the king since he was seen as being against the Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring about the return of Catholicism to its rightful place.

Some people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The plan was to kill the king when he was there.

A member of the conspiracy sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up getting cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.

The Parliament stated that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a day to be thankful for.

We ended up going to the Bonfire Night.

• The tradition called "Penny for the Guy" is an interesting one. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in a bid to get some money for the fireworks. In some areas, you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes tried to do when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.
• There are firework displays throughout the country, with the biggest cities getting some of the largest displays. Even in rural areas, you will find amazing firework displays and bonfires all over the country.

Traditions associated with the evening of bonfires.

People use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers when they parade in costumes on Bonfire Night.

It is obvious that this is a nod to the failure of Guy Fawkes and his band as they tried to blow up the Parliament, a celebration of independence, but in a safe way.

Most of the time, these events end with a firework display and large bonfire.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee and the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.
