Every year in Wivenhoe, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Essex.

• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even though they are only meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. Crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup for them. Some people cook potatoes in a foil, as well as marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that is eaten on Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very delicious.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Nights. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in order to blow up the Parliament building.
• In the UK it is very common for people to make a model of a man and burn it. The effigy is stuffed with old clothes and made out of straw or paper, which is supposed to represent Guy Fawkes.

Which foods are most popular during Bonfire Night?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only celebration of the night.

There are many foods associated with the event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee or the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.
