Every year in Woodville, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Derbyshire we gather around the bonfire.

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate Bonfire Night.

This happened in 1605 and people have been celebrating the night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact he was against the Catholics.

At that time, Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics with the vision that only an armed struggle would reinstate Catholicism to the rightful place.

Two of the supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The king was in attendance, so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member got cold feet and sent a letter to parliament.

The conspirators were taken into custody when they learned of the plan.

The Parliament shared the news that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for and hence the tradition of lighting up bonfires.

• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of the failed complot, they are also used to cook food. The crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in foil, as well as marshmallows and sausages. People eat a traditional cake called the parking cake on Bonfire Night. It has syrup, ginger, oatmeal, and treacle, and it is very delicious.
• The biggest cities get some of the largest firework displays in the country. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and firework displays all over the country.
