Every year in Worcester Park, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the county of Surrey.

There was a lot of anger against the king due to the fact that he was against Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were both Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

A group of supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

The king was in attendance and so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up cold feet.

The other conspirators were taken into custody after learning about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement and shared that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to make the 5th of November a day to be thankful for, and hence the tradition to light up bonfires.

We ended up at the Bonfire Night.

Over the years, Bonfire Night has become a community focused event despite its sinister origins.

• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of failed complot, they are also used to cook all kinds of food. A lot of people make soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. Some cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. There’s also a traditional cake that people eat on the Bonfire Night, named the Parking Cake. There is syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle in this cake, and it is very delicious.
• The tradition of "Penny for the Guy" is intriguing. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street, trying to get some money for fireworks, a few days before the Bonfire Night. In some parts of the world, you can find kids blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.
• There are firework displays all over the country, with the biggest cities getting some of the largest displays. But in general you are bound to find bonfires and incredible firework displays all over the country, even in rural areas.

What should you wear at the event?

Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in different costumes during Bonfire Night.

It is an interesting approach to prepare for the events.

The Bonfire Night is a great time for most people to show off their winter attire.

Something to keep in mind is that a winter knit with a classical touch is usually the right way to go there.

You don't have to dress up in a costume, but a proper outfit that protects you from the cold is more than welcome.
