Yeovil Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Yeovil, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Somerset we gather around the bonfire.

What is the tradition of the Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is because of the Bonfire Night celebrations.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated Bonfire Night ever since.

There was a lot of anger against the king, since he was seen as being anti-Catholic.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to restore Catholicism to its rightful place.

Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The king was in attendance so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament.

The conspirators who were involved in the plan were taken into custody here once they learned about it.

The fact that the conspirators were caught and punished was shared by the Parliament.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a day to be thankful.

We eventually went to the Bonfire Night.

There are a lot of Bonfire Night activities in the UK.

Despite the fact that the origins of the event are sinister, it has become a community event over the years.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers due to the focus on having fun.

The event of the 20th century was more similar to what we are currently experiencing.

• The bonfires are more than just a symbol of the failed complot, they are also used to cook a lot of food. A lot of people cook soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some cook potatoes wrapped in a foil and also marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional dessert people eat on Bonfire Night. The cake has syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• There is a tradition called "Penny for the Guy". Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and try to get some money for the fireworks. There are kids that blackened their faces in some regions, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
• Many people in the UK burn an effigy, a model of a man, very similar to a scarecrow. The effigy is made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes.
• The biggest cities in the country get the largest firework displays. Even in rural areas, you can find bonfires and incredible firework displays.
• There is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during Bonfire Night processions. Again, this is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, in an effort to blow up the Parliament building.

People wear costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers at Bonfire Night.

It is obvious that this is a nod to the failure of the band that tried to blow up the Parliament as a celebration of independence.

Most of the time, these events end with a firework display and a big bonfire.

Which foods are popular during the night?

The events of bonfires and fireworks are not the only things happening.

There are a lot of things associated with this event.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee or the toffee apples are all associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that they prepare around the 5th of November as well.

Some families eat soups too and share them with friends or other family members.
