Moston Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Moston, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of Greater Manchester we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night connected to?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that it is a way to celebrate Bonfire Night.

In 1605 people celebrated the Bonfire Night.

There was a lot of anger towards the king due to the fact that he was against Catholics.

Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring Catholicism back to the rightful place.

Two of the supporters came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.

There was a plan to assassinate the king because he was in attendance.

A conspiracy member got cold feet after sending a letter to the parliament.

The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and said that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November due to being a day to be thankful for.

After that, we went to the Bonfire Night.

Throughout the UK, there are Bonfire Night activities.

The origins of the event are sinister, but it has become a community focused event over the years.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century by firework manufacturers to Bonfire Night or the Fireworks Night because it was focused on having fun.

In the 20th century, the event looked similar to what we are experiencing today.

There are some traditions:

• It is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders. This is a nod to the plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had, to blow up the Parliament building.
• The biggest cities in the country get some of the largest displays. Even in rural areas, you are bound to find bonfires and amazing firework displays.
• It is very common for people in the UK to make a homemade effigy of a man and burn it. The effigy is usually made out of straw or paper and stuffed into old clothes.
• The bonfires are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot, but they are also used to cook all sorts of food. Many people heat up soup for the crowds that come by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes in a foil with marshmallows or sausages. People eat the parking cake on Bonfire Night. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very tasty.
• "Penny for the Guy" is an interesting tradition. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street and try to get some money for fireworks a few days before the Bonfire Night. In some parts of the world you can find kids that blackened their faces, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was preparing to blow up the Parliament.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee, and the toffee apples are just some of the things associated with the Bonfire Night.
