Every year in Sandal, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of West Yorkshire we gather around the bonfire.

What is the Bonfire Night associated with?
Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate King James I and also tried to blow up the parliament in order to celebrate the failure of the event.
In 1605 this happened and people have been celebrating bonfires ever since.
At that time, there was a lot of anger against the king since he was seen as being against the Catholics.
Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to bring about the return of Catholicism to its rightful place.
Two people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace.
The plan was to kill the king when he was in attendance.
A conspiracy member got cold feet after sending a letter to the parliament.
The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned of the plan.
The Parliament made a statement about the situation and shared that the conspirators had been caught and punished.
The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November as a way to be thankful.

- The tradition of "Penny for the Guy" is an interesting one. Kids used to take homemade Guy effigies on the street in the days leading up to the Bonfire Night to ask for money for fireworks. There are kids that blackened their faces in some regions, a testament to what Guy Fawkes did when he was about to blow up the Parliament.
- A homemade model of a man is often burned in the UK. This effigy is made out of straw or paper and stuffed with old clothes, it is supposed to represent Guy Fawkes.
- The country's biggest cities get some of the largest firework displays. There are bonfires and amazing firework displays all over the country.
- During the Bonfire Night processions there is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders. The plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building are a nod to this.
- The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food, even if they are not meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. Crowds come by to see the fireworks and a lot of people heat up soup. Some people cook potatoes wrapped in a foil, as well as marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat on Bonfire Nights. A cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle is very delicious.
What should you wear?
Depending on where you live, people tend to dress up in different costumes during Bonfire Night.
This approach is quite interesting and is being prepared for the events.
The Bonfire Night is a good time for most people to show off their winter clothing.
A winter knit with a classical touch is usually the right way to go here and something to keep in mind.
