Shepley Bonfire Night 2022

Every year in Shepley, on November 5, we come together to celebrate Bonfire Night, all over the county of West Yorkshire we gather around the bonfire.

Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

The main reason why Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to assassinate King James I is that he was celebrating the failure of the parliament.

In 1605 this happened, and people have celebrated the Bonfire Night ever since.

There was a lot of anger towards the king due to the fact that he was against the Catholics.

Robert and Guy Fawkes were Catholics who believed in an armed struggle to return Catholicism to its rightful place.

Some people came up with a plan to blow up the Palace of Westminster.

The king was in attendance so the plan was to kill him.

A conspiracy member sent a letter to the parliament, but ended up getting cold feet.

The conspirators were taken into custody after they learned about the plan.

The Parliament made a statement about the situation and said that the conspirators were caught and punished.

The Parliament decided to light up bonfires on the 5th of November because it is a day to be thankful.

Which, eventually, led us to the Bonfire Night.

Throughout the UK, there are Bonfire Night activities.

The origins of the event are sinister, but over the years it has become a community event.

The celebration was renamed at the beginning of the 20th century because the focus was on having fun.

The event of the 20th century looked more and more like what we are experiencing today.

What should you wear to the event?

• The bonfires are used to cook all kinds of food and are not just meant to be a symbol of the failed complot. A lot of people make soup for the people coming by to watch the fireworks. Some people cook potatoes in a foil, as well as marshmallows or sausages. The parking cake is a traditional cake that people eat during the Bonfire Night. There is a cake with syrup, ginger, oatmeal and treacle.
• It is very common for people in the UK to make a homemade model of a man and then burn it. The effigy is stuffed with old clothes and made out of straw or paper, which is supposed to represent Guy Fawkes.
• It is a tradition to carry flaming tar barrels on the shoulders during the processions. The plans that Guy Fawkes and his team had to blow up the Parliament building are a nod to this.

During Bonfire Night, people parade in costumes and use flaming torches, fireworks and sparklers.

The jacket potato, parkin, black peas, treacle toffee and the toffee apples are some of the things that are associated with the Bonfire Night.

Some regions have their own special meals that are prepared around the 5th of November.
